When is it published? [Back to top]
The print version is published in June and the CD version is released in July.

What criteria are needed to be included in the directory/what defines a convenience store? [Back to top]
The Directory of Convenience Stores includes any convenience store that operates four or more convenience store locations in the U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico. These cannot include gas-only locations, although these locations will be noted. A convenience store includes small format stores, between 500 and 3,000+ square feet and 500 and 1,500 SKUs, and meet the following criteria:
  • The store must be operating more than or at least 13 hours a day
  • The store must have at least one checkout
  • The store must carry a limited selection of grocery items including at least two of the following: toilet paper, soap, baby products, pet foods, breakfast cereal, tuna fish, toothpaste, ketchup, and canned goods
Additionally, wholesalers generating a majority of their revenue from supplying conveninence stores are also included.

How many convenience stores are there in the U.S./How many does this directory cover? [Back to top]
There are approximately 146,000 convenience stores in the U.S. Our directory covers approximately 80,000 of those locations. The remaining 66,000 are “mom & pop” locations, considered less significant players by industry standards, and are usually sold into via wholesaler channels rather than directly.

How is the Directory of Convenience Stores better than other directories? [Back to top]
We can't speak for anyone else's research, but we can tell you that our directories have an excellent reputation for accuracy and usefulness. Each year we update each profile through direct company contact, and throughout the year we track the industry through the Internet, trade journals and other sources. We have built our reputation on the high quality of our data and we work hard to maintain that reputation.

How up to date is the information/Do I really need to purchase a new directory every year? [Back to top]
We update every profile each year through direct contact with the company, trade journals and other sources. However, although our information is extremely up to date, the convenience industry changes daily. Mergers & acquisitions, companies filing for Chapter 11 and executive changes are every day occurrences, which is why a new directory is mandatory to stay ahead of the game.

Is it available on CD? [Back to top]
There is an electronic version of the directory on CD; it adds significant contact management capabilities beyond simply presenting the printed information on your computer screen. Download the demo and see how much more efficient you can be! CDs are licensed for a single user only and are non-returnable. Additional use licenses are available for $300 each.

Is it available over the Internet? [Back to top]
No, we are not offering the Directory of Convenience Stores online at this time.

What's the difference between the CD and the book? [Back to top]
The CD allows you to do more than the book does. With the CD you are able to do various searches by location, number of stores, etc. With the CD you are also able to export information to create mailing labels and perform mail merges as well as export company data to perform your own analyses.
